STRAWBERRY RHUBARB PIE MILKSHAKE

I have two life changing words for you: pie milkshake. Mind blown, right? I had my first glorious pie shake at Hamburg Inn No. 2 in Iowa City. This little greasy spoon is famous for two reasons: 1) it is the pit stop of choice for political luminaries during the Iowa Caucuses and 2) it invented the pie shake.
In my mind, reason #2 blows the visits from the likes of Obama, Clinton, and Reagan clear out of the water. In fact,  Saveur Magazine once ranked Hamburg Inn’s humble blueberry pie shake as number 19 on a list of 100 best things to eat anywhere in the world. That’s right. Anywhere in the world. 
They were not wrong. Consider the simple perfection of a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream blended with a slice of your favorite pie. It is pie a la mode reconfigured in the most genius of ways. It is also the perfect way to use up leftover strawberry rhubarb pie (or any pie, for that matter).

STRAWBERRY RHUBARB PIE MILKSHAKE
Inspired by Hamburg Inn No. 2
  • 3 generous scoops of vanilla ice cream, slightly softened 
  • 1/4 – 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 slice strawberry rhubarb pie (or your favorite)
  • whipped cream for topping

Blend the ice cream, milk, and pie together. Top with a swirl of whipped cream and a striped straw. Marvel at just how right the world can be.

Also, think of the possibilities a pie shake presents. Why not blend the milkshake with a slice of your favorite cake? Hamburg Inn’s Red Velvet Cake Milkshake is a primo example of what can happen when you use your imagination for good.

    you have GOT to be kidding! This is genius! What a great way to use leftover pie, not that I ever have left over pie, but I'm going to have to work on self control in order to try this. Also, gorgeously taken photos. It seems you have food photography down, teach me your ways!

      I hear you, Lindsey–I hardly ever have leftover pie either ๐Ÿ™‚ Perhaps I should start having my husband make two pies so we can eat one and blend the other into milkshakes!
